Mashonda: It Took Six Years Before Alicia, Swizz, And I Could Be Around Each Other Without Being In Our Feelings
As much as we preach about the importance of healthy co-parenting, whenever we see certain former couples doing so, we often ask: how? Mashonda and Swizz Beatz are at the top of that “I don’t know how they do it” list, considering the very public breakdown of their relationship which coincided with the beginning of Alicia Keys’ relationship with the producer. And the short answer to that question is it took a very long time.
Six years, in fact, is how long Mashonda said it took for her, Alicia, and Swizz to be able to be around each other without anyone being in their feelings. One pivotal change Mashonda said she personally had to make was, “I had to set my ego straight” and realize it wasn’t about her anymore and she needed to make her blended family work for the sake of her kids.
On the heels of the release of her book, Blend: The Secret to Co-Parenting and Creating a Balanced Family, Mashonda talks to us about working through her pain and what she’ll tell her son about that infamous letter she wrote Alicia Keys years ago.
