When a career woman becomes a mother, people expect that to change her work ethic, her attention to detail, her reliability, and just about every aspect of her professionalism. It’s a double-edged sword really because, if a woman is a bit off her game due to motherhood then, people say she’s not good at balancing it all. Meanwhile, if she is still totally sharp at work, people accuse her of not being there for her kids—I mean, how could she be if she’s still doing well at her job? Working moms just can’t win. In fact, have you ever thought about the reality that you don’t really hear the term working dad, like…ever. Those are just called dads. Or, businessmen. People don’t feel the need to make a big deal of the fact that a father works, or that a businessman has kids. But when a career-driven woman has a child, people begin to talk…and what they say isn’t always nice. Here are double standards working moms face that working dads don’t.

She should be at every recital/soccer game
If a working mom’s attendance at dance recitals or soccer games drops just a little, then she is called a workaholic or career-obsessed. People say she’s putting work before her children, and that she’s missing out on their childhood.

He went to one? That’s amazing!
Working fathers are praised for showing up to one in ten soccer games or recitals. The other parents, teachers, and coaches throw a parade. Aaaaw…he missed a meeting for this, they say. He may actually be the real workaholic but missing one meeting every three months to attend a soccer game makes him a hero.

She uses a nanny? That’s too bad
People can be rather critical of working moms for hiring child care. They believe they should…work from home…work part time…bring the child to work…or do whatever they can to be with their kids as much as possible. When they hire childcare they are apparently passing off their duty as moms.

She’s late; it’s because of her kids
If a working mom is late, it’s because of her kids, and it’s a problem. She needs to get her act together. She needs to tighten up the carpool schedule. She needs to wake up earlier to make it all work.

She looks a little haggard
People seem to be on the lookout for signs that motherhood is wearing on a woman (of course it is). If she looks a little tired, if she hasn’t colored her roots in a while, or if her wardrobe needs a refresher, everyone blames motherhood.

She’s cranky because she has kids
God forbid a working mom be the tiniest bit cranky. She did, by the way, have the capacity to be cranky before she had kids, but now, any time she’s a little cold with people, they blame motherhood (it can’t possibly be them).

She’s too sensitive because of the hormones
Should her colleagues find a working mom crying in the bathroom, or notice that she’s a bit touchy about things, they say it’s the hormones of motherhood making her sensitive. And it’s an issue.

Fatherhood changes a man, naturally. But people tend to only consider it a good thing if parenthood makes a man more sensitive.

She must put in 120%–he can do 20%
Working moms are expected to put in 120 percent at work and at home. Meanwhile, men get a lot of praise for putting in a measly 20 or 30 percent at home. Professionals tend to only notice the tiny ways working moms drop the ball, and throw parades for the tiny things working fathers do for their kids.
