Style Evolution: Kelis' Hairstyles From Past To Present

Kelis won our hearts over in 1999 with her debut single, “Caught Out There.” Beyond her raw talent, was a beautiful, freckle-faced rocker chick with a head full of big, colorful curls. Her sense of personal style, authenticity and self-confidence has lived through her hair choices. Throughout her career, she has experimented with different colors, cuts, textures and themes. More recently, she’s used color and designs to show black pride. Let’s take a walk down memory lane as we revisit some of Kelis’ most talked about hairstyles.

Kelis entered the music industry with her unapologetic style. In 2000, she sported green eyebrows to match her green and blue hair.

When Kelis didn’t have a bold color in her hair, she’d rock it blown out or with clip ins. Here she is in a vintage-inspired ensemble with a 1950’s style hairdo.

On the set of Milkshake, Kelis donned a head full of curls executed by flexirods. I am a huge fan of her copper-colored hair. Throughout her career when she wasn’t experimenting with color, this was her go-to hair tone.

In 2006, Kelis stepped out in an ultra cute blonde pixie cut. Again, the songstress went for a vintage-inspired look.

Perhaps this was the beginning of Kelis’ infatuation with adding designs to her haircuts. The singer has incorporated various symbols into her now signature short hairstyle.

Back to black, sorta. Kelis dyed her hair black and left a grey patch in the front of her hair. Kudos to her hair stylist! Grey is a difficult color to achieve on your hair without causing damage.

That color! Kelis achieved the perfect blonde hue in this short, tapered cut with a blue heart etched in the back.

Kelis continued her hair design trend with a few stars in the back of her head.

Come through, unicorn! Kelis added faux locs to the top of her hair, leaving the back and sides cut short.

Now this is a statement! Kelis showed off her pride with a red, black and green fist in the back of her head.

Kelis is Essence Magazine’s cover girl for their ‘Global Beauty’ issue. Her blue and white hair perfectly defines her carefree spirit.
