SZA Has A Strong Message For Women: “We Don’t Need Men To Survive”

Singer SZA is using her voice for more than just sultry, vibey Grammy-nominated music, she is making her name known as a feminist.

In a recent interview for British Vogue, the 27-year-old declared that women don’t need men.

“We don’t need [men] to survive or be valid functioning members of society,” the Top Dawg artist told the mag.

“[Women are] representing themselves in a new grown-up demographic that’s probably quite threatening to what we’ve always known.”

She also spoke out against the inherent misogyny in the music industry that plagues women on the come up. She explained there is this air of “male entitlement to you and your thoughts and your body and the way you look—but it also doesn’t matter.”

“I don’t try to analyze those things,” she continued, “because I feel like if I focus on who I want to be and what I want to represent for women and what I want to represent for myself, I don’t have time to worry about how men view me.”

Breaking free from male expectations is a challenge women worldwide face. It’s hard not to care about how they view your hair, your body, your appearance, your lifestyle, or even how you cook and clean (ahem, Amara La Negra).

But it’s important on our life journeys that we live according to our own values versus contorting our entire existence to meet the desires of a man–who may or may not stay anyway!

Yes, for those who desire male partnership, a man may be a WANT, but once we turn it into a need, the desperation may attract the wrong person or even turn off the right one.
