It’s National Girlfriend’s Day and don’t you think you should celebrate the female friends in your life? They’ve probably seen you through breakups, new jobs, lost jobs, fights with your mom, some terrible haircuts, and those times you almost got sucked into a cult that you just thought was a yoga group (oh, just me on that one?) We celebrate anniversaries with our romantic partners, but shouldn’t we celebrate our platonic girlfriends? They may not be our significant other but they are certainly significant. Life would feel pretty empty without them. I mean—who would you text selfies to from the store changing room to get approval on some outfits? Or disapproval (remember when they saved you from those pants you thought were chic but looked like scrubs?) Here’s to our lady friends. Here are ways to celebrate National Girlfriends Day.
Do a slideshow and wine night
Grab your besties and ask everyone to put their favorite photos of all of you on a thumb drive. Get a projector, or hook up your laptop to your big screen, and look over all of your memories together. You can each write up anecdotes, about what you remember from each photo.
Have a spa day
Spa days are a wonderful way to reconnect with your besties. There are no interruptions in the spa. Make a rule that everyone leave their phones in their lockers and just totally immerse themselves in the peacefulness of the place. Oh, and book couples massages.
Go to a gay club
A group of women at a gay club always have the most fun. You can dance all night with gay guys who have no intention of hitting on you. And, at some places, you can find ladies’ night drink specials. So go shamelessly request Lady Gaga from the DJ all night.
Do a weekend getaway
Get everyone together for a weekend getaway. It doesn’t have to be expensive. You can all split an AirBnb in a quaint town. So long as you have a pool, cocktails, and each other, you’ll have fun and be away from your responsibilities.
Do a brunch hop
It’s like a pub crawl, but during the day, and for brunch. Choose a path of places with delicious brunch food and mimosas, and do a crawl through each one. If it ends in a thrift store and impromptu photo shoot, that won’t be the worst thing.
Rent a boat
If you have a harbor nearby and can rent a boat for the day, that’s a nice, relaxing way to reconnect and get away from it all. Bring your swimsuits, your favorite music, and some wine.
List the times you’ve saved each other
There are probably a lot. You’ve talked each other out of terrible career choices, bad haircuts, bad boyfriends, and other dicey decisions. Go ahead and commemorate those.
Treat yourselves to a nice dinner
Take yourselves out for a proper date night. Go somewhere fancy—somewhere worthy of a Valentine’s Day meal. Get the champagne and the four course meal and tell the server that you’re celebrating National Girlfriends Day.
Do a wine tasting day
Get a bus and a driver and visit the local wineries (or breweries, if that’s your thing). There’s nothing like plenty of vino and picturesque views to get you giggling and reminiscing.
Watch your favorite old movies
Watch those movies that made you cry and laugh when you were younger. Those were the movies you disobeyed bedtime for. They were the movies that were there for you during your formative years.
Go to an amusement park
Amusement parks make us feel like little kids again, and you get plenty of time to catch up while waiting in lines for rides. Plus, since you pay a pretty penny to get in, you want to spend the whole day there.
Go camping
Camping is an awesome way to reconnect. It’s just you and the wilderness. Through setting up the tent, getting the fire going, and dealing with the other little tasks that come with camping, you’ll bond all over again.
Recreate your younger years
What did you used to do as kids? Go to the zoo? Arcade? Go-karts? Go recreate a day in your childhood and walk down memory lane.
Visit your college/high school haunting grounds
If you went to high school or college together, you can visit those old stomping grounds. You can get a beer at your college pub, or look at the stars on the bleachers of the high school you went to.
Take a best friends test
You can create it yourself, full of questions about each other. It’s a fun way to prove how well you know each other, and to bring up old, quirky memories.
