No Savior Seen as M.T.A. Takes Step to Raise Fares and Tolls
(NYT) — Before the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board pushed ahead a plan on Wednesday to raise fares next year, there were the familiar laments laced with indignation from riders and their advocates.
But there was at least one point of consensus in the boardroom: With the state facing record deficits, a bailout from Albany or City Hall is little more than a fantasy, leaving the burden on riders to support a transit system whose finances remain fragile.
