A Harlem Arts Group Exhales
(NY Times) — Artistic success has never been Harlem Stage’s problem. Even before its Gatehouse theater became the first new performing arts space in Harlem in 20 years when it opened, in 2006, it had presented emerging artists, and seemingly everyone from Tito Puente to Abbey Lincoln. Its programs for school children were lauded as well. But financially, the group, incorporated as a nonprofit in 1983, sometimes struggled. By the end of the 2009 season, its accumulated deficit stood at $737,000.
