African-American Entrepreneur John W. Thompson, CEO of Virtual Instruments
When John Thompson announced his decision to retire as CEO of Symantec, after a decade in that post, the veteran tech executive joked to a reporter that his only plans involved “a chaise longue on the beach and a mai tai.” Little more than a year later, the 61-year-old Thompson is back in the saddle. He became CEO last month of Virtual Instruments, a Scotts Valley startup that makes performance-monitoring tools for data storage networks and big computer systems.
