Traditional anniversaries are rather arbitrary. How do you calculate an anniversary anyway? It’s not the first date because that was nothing—you had no idea what this would even be. You’ve had plenty of first dates with plenty of people. You’d rather celebrate the anniversary of something you only did with this person. That also means it couldn’t have been the first time you had sex because, well, you’ve done that with other people, too. If you just choose some random day around the time you decided to make things official, there may not have been anything special about that day. Relationships, after all, are not made up of anniversaries. They are marked by far more important moments—the little moments that happen the 364 days in between those anniversaries. And many of those moments warrant their own special day. Here are funny anniversaries you and your boo should celebrate.

Your first co-addressed letter
When someone sends a letter that is addressed to the two of you, that’s a big deal. That means the world is beginning to recognize that this is the relationship that’s here to stay—that this will probably be your life partner.

Your first flatulence
Whether it’s that first fart or the first time you had to tell your partner to turn up the TV loud so you could do your thing in the bathroom, it’s a milestone. Truly, discussing bathroom matters in front of your SO is the biggest form of flattery.

Your first fight
Hey, you survived it! You should mark that moment so you know you’ll always know you can survive your fights. If you were able to survive that one when your communication skills were still just developing, you’ll only get better and better at fighting.

The first use of a pet name
You remember that day. It just slipped out of you. You could feel it, in your body, that this person was no longer just some person to you. You were connected. Your connection was special and as such, you weren’t just going to call him by his name the way the rest of the world does.

When you become an old, boring couple
That first night you both agree to skip out on the party and stay home to watch Netflix is a glorious night. You’ve officially decided that being together is more gratifying than anything else.

Your first queef
Or whatever your first awkward sex thing was. If you were able to laugh it off and live to see another day of sex, then you knew this relationship had lasting power.

When you find one another self-pleasuring
You both knew, somewhere, in the back of your minds that the other person does that. But that first time you stopped by your boo’s place unannounced and found him masturbating was an important moment. You politely backed away from the bedroom and waited in the kitchen, showing him that he doesn’t have to change his habits to be with you.

When you stop labeling food
The day you stop labeling food or completely lose track of who owes whom what money is the day you’ve become a little family.

When his mom starts calling you instead of him
If his mom starts calling you to catch up, or get an update on your Thanksgiving plans as a couple, then she officially sees you as part of the family. She knows that by calling you, she’ll get just as much information about her son as she should if she called him. She acknowledges that you’re that bonded to her son.

When you pop that zit
When you pop his zit, shave his back, or look at that weird bump on his butt cheek. That’s another one of those moments when you realize you’re family.

Your sexaversary
Well, of course, your sexaversary should get some acknowledgment! I know you’ve had sex with other people, but this person turned out to be that very special person.

The night you preferred to not have sex
You should also celebrate the opposite of your sexaversary—the night you both decided you didn’t feel like having sex, and that watching TV and snuggling would be more satisfying.

When you exchange keys
When you exchange keys, give each other a drawer, apply for that parking pass for one another or do anything else that says you’re here to stay.

When you become his emergency contact
Listing someone as your emergency contact is a pretty big deal. That means that you believe they’ll still be in your life when some unforeseeable event takes place in the far, far future (hopefully).

When you criticize each other, and it’s fine
You know that moment when you casually point out that major personality flaw or quirk your partner has? But you say it with a tone as if you’re just talking about the weather? And you both just nod in agreement and it doesn’t have to be a whole fight? That’s a great moment.
